Shipping Industry

All members of the international maritime shipping industry clearly understand the critical importance that the international maritime labor law has, looking at the economic and socio-political aspects, as well. This has also been officially recognized by the International Maritime Law Institute which has organized training courses on this subject with the persons participating in the courses representing ILO, IMO, ITWF and other internationally recognized organizations.

The main content of the present monograph was prepared to cover the fundamentals of the law. The most fundamental challenge of the labor law is to achieve the proper balance between the practical interest of the two major stakeholders. The motto chosen by the authors for incorporation into the title of this volume clearly describes the content of the document. Recommended to the professional maritime lawyers as well as to the students and all persons interested in the maritime law and labor related issues.

The present publication is dealing with the design of the liner shipping networks delivering correct routes and schedules for the vessels that visit the harbors on a regular basis or are engaged in a closed round trips. One of the examples of such vessels can be container vessels commonly maintaining a weekly harbor visiting schedule.

The author of the book has elaborated a network design approach that considers not only the harbors planned to be visited, cargo transported and number of the available vessels but also the environmental influences. In addition, the revenue contribution of various alternative systems of shipboard propulsion can also be taken into consideration and duly analyzed. 

Numerous extensive tests have been conducted and the result obtained during those tests are actually indicating that quite significant savings can be reached when using such design approach. The book starts with some introduction followed by the general information on the maritime transportation including freight transportation systems, scheduling and routing. The rest of the chapters deal with the environmental routing, computational tests, strategic design etc. There are several appendices at the end of the book.

We definitely have to emphasize the significance of the today's international liner shipping since a majority of the international trade is being effected by sea and the share of the liner shipping in the total freight revenue exceeds fifty percent. However, it appears that people are not actually well aware of the fundamentals of the liner shipping industry, especially its economics.

This book was prepared and released with the ultimate intention to cover the gap in the information and let people get familiarized with the most important aspects of the international liner shipping industry. Its content is arranged in three major sections - the first section addresses the liner shipping industry itself, providing general information on the subject. while the second section is dealing with the optimization of the liner service.

In turn, the third and last section of the publication is devote to the conference systems and their economic evaluation. These three parts altogether are expected to make a complete book of economics of the international liner shipping. Different approaches have been used when compiling the book but they have eventually resulted in a very useful and readable publication.

As we all know, some changes of fundamental nature did come to the maritime Arctic region in the beginning of our century. Those interested in the subject are aware of the fact that the ice covering the surface of the Arctic Ocean is being transformed in terms of its character, as well as extent and thickness of the ice layer. As transport service providers that facilitate trade flows within the worldwide supply chain, most of the shipping companies initiated the process of responding to the important environmental concerns by means of embracing the newly proposed "green shipping practices" in order to green their operations.

GSPs are considered to be right there among the environmental management practices that are commonly undertaken by shipping companies in performing shipping activities. GSPs include calculation of the carbon footprint of the shipping routes as well as using alternative shipping equipment with the intention to reduce environmental damage in transporting cargoes.

One of the examples is the operations of RSC, standing for the River Shuttle Containers, a service provided by the CMA CGM to transfer the containers between main/feeder ports by vessels having higher carrying capacity than trucks. Currently, the basis of the revival of world economy is still unsteady with the risks of economic downturn. The developed economies of USA, Europe, and Japan and the emerging market economies represented by China and India are both faced with the pressure to seek the momentum mechanism for economic growth to resuscitate or stabilize economy.

From the perspective of maintaining economic growth rate, the divergence among the economies is quite salient. The impetus to promote the real economy through international trade and OFDI is quite insufficient. For both the developed economies and the developing economies, they are faced with the challenge to adjust the industrial structure and further economic reform to prevent the economy from declining. The end stage of the "Cold War" has seriously affected debates concerning the maritime doctrine and strategy as well as the maritime operations and technologies involved. This, in turn, has eventually led to the reconsideration of the theoretical fundamentals and practical side of the maritime power.
