ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING

The present publication discusses the economic and environmental impacts of so many policy instruments that can be or already can be applied in order to address these impacts and reviews examples of the environmental aspects and also discusses the drivers of port activities.

It particularly draws on findings from case studies of five largest ports, namely Rotterdam, Busan, Vancouver, Los Angeles, and Long Beach; it also provides more ad hoc information regarding other ports. The volume opens with some introductory info addressing the activity levels in sea ports and describing the most important environmental issues that are directly relating to the port activities.

The second chapter is providing several real life case studies while the third chapter is solely devoted to the exhaust emissions, such as the SOx, NOx, particulate matter, VOC, i.e. volatile organic compounds emissions and measures that are commonly taken to cope with the emissions; the fuel quality is also addressed within this chapter.

The rest of the chapters are dealing with the greenhouse gases, other environmental problems, feeder traffic, port state authority and other aspects considered important by the author.

DEVELOPMENTS IN MARITIME TRANSPORTATION AND EXPLOITATION OF SEA RESOURCES

In the recent decades, newly established requirements and numerous intergovernmental regulations relating to the ship technology for reduced pollution as well as environmental impact have become very strict; the response to the demand of greening of the maritime transport has been recognized as one of the most importanе factors concerning global warming and climatic change.

It means that there is a huge demand for the environmentally friendly technical solutions that would offer significant reduction of the exhaust gases. In addition, the increased competition in maritime technologies requires more economical ships. As a result, minimization of vessel resistance/drag has turned into a central issue.

From the other side, the superior swimming and maneuvering capabilities of aquatic animals has motivated research on fish-like propulsion for many years in the past. The book is covering all recent major developments in the marine transportation and exploitation of the ocean resources, bringing together a great selection of documents that reflect the fundamental areas of the research in the fields of ship machinery, design and hydrodynamics, marine structures, safety, reliability, ship construction yard technology, and others.
