TOO GOOD TO WASTE — PORT OF ROTTERDAM WASTE MANAGEMENT

Ninety percent of all goods worldwide are transported by sea. Shipping is the essential part of global economy and the harbors are working hard. Like the port of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest logistics and industrial hub. Global population growth will drive up traffic on the world’s seaways by a factor of four by the year 2050. If we are not careful then the pollution will increase too. Without action, our oceans are becoming a plastic soup.

Corals are dying and too much oil is ending up in the sea, sometimes as a result of illegal discharges. Ignorance and negligence are severely disrupting the delicate balance of nature. But the damage is being addressed; laws and guidelines are constantly being adopted, sailors, ship owners, ports and waste reception facilities – all the parties involved are becoming increasingly aware of their responsibility.

The port of Rotterdam is no exception. Here, the challenges to receive and handle ships as efficiently as possible to continuously improve the ways the wastes are collected and processed. Much of the efforts go to developing new recycling methods, for waste does not belong to the sea. The port of Rotterdam authority is committed to the clean sea – a policy that is bearing fruit.

INTERNATIONAL MARITIME LAW INSTITUTE PROMOTIONAL VIDEO

Shipping today is perhaps one of the industries considered most international - today's shipping is serving from ninety to ninety-five percent of the whole global trade; the expands of the globe seas is also taking place through the instrumentality of ships, a means of convergence between contents and countries.

Because of the international nature of the shipping industry, it have long been acknowledged that the actions taken to improve safety in the maritime operations would actually be twice as effective if they were carried out at international level rather than done by the individual countries acting unilaterally and in most cases with little to no coordination with each other.

And this has eventually resulted in the situation where several countries have made a proposal to establish a new permanent international regulatory body that would be dealing with the promotion of the maritime safety in a more effective manner...

THE MARITIME LABOUR CONVENTION 2006

In the last sixty years there have been enormous changes in the maritime industry, all merchant ships that ever sailed the oceans feeding the market of the growing global economy. However, the rights of the seafarers have failed to keep up with this changing industry coming entangled with the mess of complex legislation and rules until now.

The 26 February 2006 is a very important date for the international legislation - this is the date when the MLC, standing for the Maritime Labour Convention, was put in place by the International Labour Organization.

Subject convention was largely initiated by the maritime industry itself. The convention is supported by the industry and governments, and is being ratified by the increasing number of countries. The MLC replaces the often confusing tangle of forty conventions and twenty-nine recommendations that had accumulated over time with the clear, simple and practical framework.

Everyone working in and associated with the maritime industry, from the ratings to the government ministers will benefit from it. This will effectively change the way we operate in this dynamic industry. Watch this video and get familiarized with the basics of the convention.

THE SINKING OF THE ESTONIA

Zero-Hour... The present video film has been solely devoted to the one of the most tragic catastrophes at sea is a sort of documental drama, not purely technical and therefore interesting to the general audience not only to the naval architects or historians - its content is mainly based on numerous eyewitness accounts and the findings that have been made by the Joint Accident Investigation Commission consisting of Estonia, Finland and Sweden governments.

Some of the dialogues that have been included in this film have been intentionally fictionalized just to make it more gripping. As mentioned above, we would recommend this video to everyone. The newcomers to the industry and students will see how disastrous the consequences of the catastrophes can be at sea while the professionals may use the materials in this film to make their own version of what actually happened on board. In any case, it makes sense to try and understand that tragic case which was a lesson to learn and remember; all efforts shall be made to avoid this from happening again in the future...
