The content of this introductory publication is intended to be of practical use for a broad range of the readers with the interest in marine radio communications. It will also be excellent for the self-learning and we would recommend to go through the pages of the volume prior to taking the formal GMDSS training courses. Individual limitations are commonly imposed to the radio- and satellite systems forming a part of the GMDSS system, relating to the availability and range.

To make sure that all required functions of communications are readily available at any time, the duplicates of the functions considered vital, for example warning, alerting and communications are included. The vessel in distress should be able to automatically alert the coastal state stations and RCC, standing for the rescue coordination centers. The warnings received by these stations will then be passed to the vessels located in that area. The special systems are taking care of the inter-ship communications.

The requirements applicable to the shipboard radio equipment will mainly depend on the area the vessel is currently sailing in. Four sea areas are defined within the GMDSS system. When distress message is sent to another vessel, or to a RCC, the latter is leading and coordinating the whole rescue operation...
