Taking into account the limited nature of the liability of the ship owners, the classification societies are normally considered exempted from liability. The present publication by Nicolai Lagoni is intended to analyze the actions of the class societies that could potentially give rise to the claims.

The author of the volume is also analyzing whether or not the classification societies shall be exempted from liability under American. German or English maritime law. Moreover, the content of the volume is developing the fundamentals of the international convention concerning the limitation of liability of the class societies.

There are not too many books available today that would address this issue which, however, is quite important. Since classification is one of the key aspects of ship building and operation, it is critically important to have clear understanding of the liability matters.

Therefore, we would highly recommend this document to all participants of the shipping process, i.e. not only to the class societies but also to the ship owners and operators directly engaged in the commercial and legal aspects since they will all definitely appreciate the content.
