The present CCS Rules apply to the two types of steel floating docks operating fixedly in sheltered waters - cassoon type and pontoon type. In the first type of FDD (floating dry dock) both wing walls and bottom caisson are continuous and inseparable, while in the second type the bottom is formed of non-continuous pontoons while the wing falls are continuous.

The pontoons of the floating dock may be either detachable or, alternatively, they may be permanently attached to the wing walls. China Classification Society will, however, give special consideration to the FDD of other types. These Rules are applicable to the floating dock contracted for construction on or after the date of entry into force of the Rules. This also applies to the floating dock converted from a ship.

The Rules consist of six major chapters covering general provisions, hull structure, stability, maximum submerged draught mark, freeboard and working, machinery installations, electrical installations, fire protection, fire detection, and fire extinction. Apart from the designers and constructors of the floating dry docks. this book will be of great use for everyone willing to get some knowledge of the requirements that generally apply to such structures.
