The on-board watertight doors are commonly designed and installed to prevent the water ingress from one water-tight compartment to others when there is flooding or any other accident accidents. These doors are normally used onboard vessels and other marine structures in areas with relatively high probability of flooding are high - these would include engine room compartments, shaft tunnels and some other.
This short video will give trainees some more information on the watertight doors. Note that we have another book covering the construction and use of the watertight doors and an excellent supplementary video film. However, you shall always remember that while the doors are important for the safety of the people, they can be dangerous - they can harm and even kill someone - if you do not strictly follow the correct procedure for their use or do not pay enough attention.
Noting the critical importance of the watertight doors for the integrity of the ship's hull and, consequently, for the safety and health of the people on board and protection of the environment, we highly recommend to go through all available training tools and get as much understanding of this item as possible.
