MARITIME COMMUNICATIONS AND IMO SMCP

One more useful publication for all navigators. The book starts with the general info about maritime communications and then we proceed to the proper conduct of the maritime radio conversations. The next chapter addresses the established distress/urgency/safety procedures to be strictly followed, while the following one has been solely devoted to the SAR, standing for the search-and-rescue operations.

The rest of the content is covering the routine voice communications, digital selective calling and DSC operational procedures for the vessels, universal AIS transponders, MMSI, IAMSAR manual of communications, COMSAR/CIRC/21, ship reporting systems, GMDSS and may other relevant information.

There is also a concise glossary of terms and abbreviations used within this document and during maritime communications in general. make sure you have a copy of this relatively compact but so practical publication on board your ship and make it accessible for easy and ready reference of the crew members.

INSTRUCTION MANUAL — INTRODUCTION TO UNDERWATER ACOUSTICS

This instruction manual was officially released by Kongsberg Simrad AS for training purposes. It covers such areas of the underwater acoustics as transducers, sound propagation, sound paths, acoustic noise, positioning principles, examples, performance of the acoustic positioning systems, and basic acoustic formulas.

The first, introductory, chapter of the manual provides users with the general information about the underwater acoustics and transmission. The sound propagation principles have also been covered in this chapter with specific attention paid to such aspects as the pressure and intensity of the sound going through the waters, transmission loss etc.

One separate sub-chapter has been solely devoted to the transducers, their construction and efficiency, beam pattern, source level and other relevant items. The rest of the sub-chapters are dealing with the principles of positioning, sound paths, acoustic noise, performance of the systems, basic formulas relating to the underwater acoustics, etc.

HIPAP SYSTEMS — HIGH PRECISION ACOUSTIC POSITIONING — TECHNICAL TRAINING GUIDE

This book is the Technical training guide for the Kongsberg Simrad HiPAP systems. it has following chapters relating to HIPAP and Hull Units - system description, maintenance, technical specifications, circuit boards and power units description, cable layout and interconnections, single/dual net, spare parts, previous hardware.

Then, there are some Additional Sections for Handouts - background information, APOS exercises, communications protocols, COM ports in APOS and troubleshooting, APOS backup files, notes. The maintenance information is intended to be used by the duly trained maintenance technicians or engineers, with required experience of electronic/digital circuitry, computers and electromechanical design.

The level of the information is based on Kongsberg Simrad's maintenance philosophy: The onboard technical personnel shall, with the help of related documentation and the system's built-in test functions, be able to identify malfunctions, locate the fault correctly, and replace the major parts, modules and components on the "Line Replaceable Unit" (LRU) level. He/she will however not attempt to repair the LRUs.

HANDLING SHIPS IN ICE — A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO HANDLING 1A AND 1AS SHIPS

Nowadays, the process of global warming is reducing the density of the ice concentrations; that is why more and more vessels are getting designed and constructed to be able to operate in such extreme conditions which seriously limit both speed and maneuverability of the vessel and increase the risk of damage to the propellers, hull plating and propulsion engines.

Subject limitations eventually lead to higher risks of collision and grounding. And this is, in turn, the main reason why the expert knowledge and skills are required for handling ships in ice conditions. The purpose of the present volume is to demonstrate to the readers why those skills are considered necessary. Some of the vessels, particularly 1A Super - class, are designed for operation in such conditions.

But, the nature of their design and technical characteristics including power and speed have a sort of perverse effect - it means that when the vessel is not handled carefully, the risk of sustaining damage, get aground or collided significantly increases.

There are some other deficiencies that can become causes of the accidents, for example poor organization and communication, failure to follow the operational instructions and routing procedures etc. The material presented in this book is arranged in five sections covering all aspects of navigating in ice from preparation for voyage to berthing.

HANDBOOK FOR INSPECTION OF SHIPS AND ISSUANCE OF SHIP SANITATION CERTIFICATES

The present official WHO document is intended to replace the previously issued interim technical advise; its content reflect the today world's need for common and proper understanding of the scope and purpose of the global application of SSC, i.e. ship sanitation certification. It is a critically important instrument for providing required help in prevention and control of the known health risks.

It will also help to provide a common way of registering and communicating events as well as the measures taken on board vessels. The handbook shall significantly raise the awareness of the operators and response to the health events, providing further opportunities for the routine verification of the health status. The present document would better be used together with the Guide to Ship Sanitation.

The content of the handbook has been developed through the series of drafting and review steps incorporating the information obtained in the course of the several expert meetings. Recommended to be possessed by any person engaged in ship sanitation inspection and issuance of the relevant certification paperwork for their quick reference.

DP OPERATORS HANDBOOK

This practical guide released by The Nautical Institute has been originally intended for the masters and mates of the ships equipped with the DP systems; moreover, its content is expected to be useful to all people willing to get some good knowledge on the DP arrangement and working principles.

The book covers such an important matters as dynamic positioning principles and systems, redundancy and different classes of DP equipment, operations of the vessels with DPS installed on board, watch keeping and operational planning, position reference systems and power plants, propulsion units and thrusters, human factors to bear in mind, DPS operator training.

There is guidance provided for masters on how to conduct proper assessment of the competency of DPS operator candidates. Note that the book has been supplemented by a concise yet quite comprehensive Glossary describing the commonly used DP-related terms and abbreviations.

Though this publication is not expected to be a complete treatise on DP, it is still aimed to the people transferring to work on the DP ships from more conventional ships, not making any attempt to replace the standard textbooks on DP systems or going too deep into the individual manufacturer's DP systems.

DP POWER AND THRUSTERS

This last part of DP Training presentations addresses the dynamic positioning systems power and thrusters. The previous parts of the training set covered the DP Applications and DP Incidents and we strongly recommend you to get familiar with the content of those two presentations in order to get better understanding.

This part is covering the main types of thrusters, popellers, rudder effectiveness, alternative rudder, Becker rudder, Flap rudder, Schilling rudder, controllable-pitch propellers, azipod basics, the principle of the azipod, azipod propulsion history. The authors of the presentation have included numerous practical examples and have well illustrated the booklet so that it could serve as a good and easy-to-use training manual.

The approach used by the author has remained unchanged and this training source can easily be used by the non-experienced personnel willing to know more about the DP systems, their construction, their operation, application and potential consequences of the failure in these systems.
