This book addresses the unforeseen challenges that affect every facet of contemporary maritime business. Each chapter focuses on the singular challenge confronting the maritime industry – namely, uncertainty.
Every chapter examines a particular segment of the maritime business community to enhance the understanding of complex markets, to explore solutions for economic or financial sustainability amidst the pressures of climate change, to evaluate technology as a potential future option, and ultimately to demonstrate how to leverage large data sets for more informed decision-making and policy formulation that were previously impractical due to limitations in scale and capacity.
It is anticipated that these efforts will be viewed as an initial small step towards effectively transforming the industry in accordance with Schumpeter (1943) and academically shifting a paradigm of thought and scientific inquiry in alignment with Kuhn (2012), thereby ensuring that the maritime sector is better informed and prepared, and can significantly contribute to human welfare.
