Through the naval history, the sailors acquired the perfect understanding of the rope handling, still unmatched by any other group of people from any other industry. That is why it is deservedly considered reasonable to associate the most significant knots with the nautical practices.
For sure, they formed an integral part of the sailing. Of course, there were textbooks available onboard ships, with their content studied with both admiration and skepticism. It was quite quickly realized by the experienced sailors that many of those publications were full of inconsistencies and errors, making the suggested methods impractical.
As a result, the seamen were left uncertain about what to trust and began to view the available instructions with significant disdain. The main intention of the authors of this book is to provide seamen with the clear, understandable and easy-to-follow reference to the ropes and ropework.
