The content of this volume bases on the materials that have been presented in the course of the international conference hosted by the Centre d’Océanologie of Marseille in 2008; it covers a wealth of all hot topics that were related to the ways of interaction of the mankind with the marine environment. The chapters of this book present work on the key areas of oceanography.

It features the most recognized scientific works by the world leading researchers in the field of oceanography from Japan and France and demonstrates the strength of the links between the two scientific communities. The materials have been arranged into six main sections. The first section is dedicated to the aquaculture and covers the newly developed methods for seed culture, quality control of the cultured fish, genetically modified fish, salmon resource creation etc. The second section addresses the artificial reefs and touches the legal aspects, new experiences and developments.

The next section deals with the marine biological diversity and covers biological invasion, adaptation and distribution issues. The remaining three sections deal with the coastal managements, observation of the marine environment, and physical, biogeochemical, biological and chemical functions. At the end of the book there are lists of participants, oral presentations and numerous photographs.
