EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION ON BOARD SHIP

The authors want to demonstrate how important it is to establish and subsequently maintain a proper communication procedures on absolutely all levels if you want to operate your ship safely and efficiently. The communication is commonly referred to as a transfer of messages and signals between persons willing to create an understanding or a particular meaning, or a certain type of reaction.

Should there be no reaction received, then we are most probably talking about the one-way type of communication. Three major communication types include verbal, written and non-verbal communication meaning signals and signs. One can never overestimate the importance of having a good communication for the safety of navigation and ship handling at all times. A lack of communication is one of the reasons leading to bad consequences.

According to the statistical data collected in the past decades, from seventy to eighty per cents of all accidents and incidents occurring at sea are originating from some sort of communication problem. That is why it is very important for all crew members to work out good and effective communication procedures.
