SHIP CONNECTIVITY

In the relatively near past, it was the established tradition that the vessels, once they had left the port, were almost completely isolated from any type of communication with the shore. This situation continued to be true until the radio installation on ships have been introduced - we are now talking about the very beginning of the twentieth century. Since that time, the capacity as well as the coverage of communication between vessels and the shore bases has been evolving.

However, it shall be noted that we are currently experiencing significant changes in this field, with the introduction of the digital signals - their advantage is that they are easily transferred from shore to the vessel and in the reverse direction, at quite significant rates and, what is very important, this can be done independent on the location of the vessel. In this document the editors try to describe the technical updates and developments as well as the implications that such developments can have for the shipping industry of the nearest future.

Four major parts of the present DNV GL paper cover historical and current drivers, modern communication and future developments in this field, ship connectivity - how it will be in the future, and opportunities ahead...

MARITIME IMPACT — TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION — UNCOVERING THE POTENTIAL

Another release of the popular Maritime Impact magazine issued by DNV GL for their customers and business partners. This issue was published under motto - Uncovering the Potential. Have a look in this paper and you will find so much interesting inside.

The first part of the publication contains some news on the innovation and technology, fleet performance, environment protection, latest energy studies, LNG bunkering issues, green shipping etc. this block is followed by the updates in the cruise market and standardization, ship security and international conferences. There is a separate article dedicated to the new classification notation developed and offered by DNV GL - GAS READY, and about the Barzan container vessel, the first one to be delivered with this new notation.

Significant part of the paper deals with the environment protection - we all know and understand that speed shall no longer be considered the only thing that matters in the shipping industry - the increasing importance of the sustainability is something to be discussed. The optimization of the fuel consumption is also one of the trending matters of today's industry - and the technical expertise, huge experience and many solutions enhancing the efficiency, that were proposed by DNV GL professionals, are playing a serious role.

DNV GL TANKER UPDATE

Another official release by DNV GL Class Society. The authors of this publication included the very latest updates to the statutory requirements that are applicable to tankers, information about the IACS CSR for oil tankers/bulk carriers, vetting compliance support, carbon future prospects, newbuilding specification services, the situation on the crude oil market, etc.

The present release of the Tanker Update is coming with the regular self-explanatory motto "Expertise is knowing which details make all difference". Inert gas - Stability - ODME type-approved for bio-fuel blends - What is IACS CSR? - Consequences - PSC inspections and deficiencies - Top ten deficiency main categories and types in all visited ports - Deficiency ratio trend and benchmark - Review of technical specifications - Alternative fuel options - International regulations by IMO. There many serious changes that have been happening to the tanker market during past months, most of them caused by the significant drop in the oil prices.

It seems that, most probably, we are not going to experience any increase in the new construction market in the nearest future - this is the reason why we would better concentrate on improving the utilization rate for the existing tanker fleet. And, in turn, this is exactly what the present DNV GL publication is about.

DNV GL STRATEGIC RESEARCH & INNOVATION POSITION PAPER — ALL SUBSEA — CREATING VALUE FROM SUBSEA PROCESSES

Subsea is an essential part of most contemporary common floating development concepts and tie-ins to fixed installations. While the industry is seeking standardization and simplification of subsea installations, inspired by concepts like the Statoil Subsea Factory, questions remain over the viability as well as ultimate potential of an all-subsea solution.

In this research paper we explore these questions, highlighting opportunities and current limitations as we evaluate a hypothetical all-subsea solution: SuPPS - Subsea Production with Pipeline to Shore. The primary objective of this position paper is to check the viability of an all-subsea field development solution. We consider those circumstances in which all-subsea solutions may become preferred field development concepts in the future as compared with existing alternatives, mainly FPSO. Subsea installations are inherently complex, and as this paper demonstrates, a hypothetical all-subsea solution has a plethora of interrelated and interdependent systems.

Unfortunately, the technical complexity can over-complicate discussions regarding the potential business viability of an all-subsea concept. In order to add clarity to the discussion, we "unpack" the SuPPS into a number of discrete steps, and assess the business case for each individual step as, one-by-one, we intend to move the most important components of our 'benchmark' from topside to subsea. Based on this approach, we may conclude that while soem of the technologies are enhancing (i.e., offering superior performance and value compared with other technologies) or enabling (i.e., opening up new opportunities for profitable production), other parts of the concept seriously limit its overall applicability.

DNV GL FERRY AND RO—RO UPDATE

Today, we all see the signs showing us that the new construction market is slowly recovering. The issues reating to the fuel efficiency are considered very important for the new ship designs and strict SOx requirements have been already introduced in the SECAs.

However, we will soon see how the European Union enforces strict max content of the sulphur of 0.5% for passenger vessels operating outside SECAs. Apart from the emissions, this paper also addresses some safety issues - for example, the fires occurring on ro-ro decks. Such fires have attracted so much of attention during past years. We all have to take this very seriously as this matter is of critical importance.

Many investigations have been performed in this regard, but there have been no any significant improvement so far. In addition to all stated above, this booklet addresses hybrid vessels, safety in the ferry industry, drive-on bunkering, scrubbers and their installation, some consideration for emergency equipment fuel, LNG-fuelled ferries and even 3D printing for the marine industry applications.. Various environmental regulations and rules have also found their reflection in this document together with some other valuable info.
