OFFSHORE SUPPLY SAFETY

Working on board any OSV, i.e. offshore supply vessel, is normally very intensive job which is also highly demanding of all people involved, including ratings, officers and personnel. The difficulties associated with the work offshore include long hours of work, hazardous shipboard operations, harsh weather, slipper deck surface and many others.

The shipboard personnel shall be duly aware of the established procedures and follow them at all times in order to improve the chances to stay safe. The PPE, i.e. personal protective equipment, is mandatory for use. The content of this training booklet is made of five major modules. The first two modules are dealing with loading and discharging bulk cargoes as well as handling deck cargo.

The preparation and operation inside the five hundred meter zone is covered in the third module. The last two modules address the personal safety of the crew members on deck and the common problems relating to the tiredness and fatigue. Four appendices to the main part of the volume contain checklists for the wet and dry bulk transfer, 500-metre safety zone checklist, and usage of the VHF radios. This booklet is most useful when used together with the video training on the same topic and we recommend you to check both.

The maritime piracy together with the armed robbery are considered two maybe the most serious threats affecting the international maritime shipping community of today. Regretfully, it takes place everywhere and not only off Somalia or South China Sea.

Though numerous military and diplomatic initiatives have been already undertaken by many countries and despite all protective measures adopted by the ship operators, ship owners and managers, the ships are still attacked and the seafarers on board are regularly put at risk when working in the international waters.

The United Nations in cooperation with the IMO has recognized that much more should be done in order to provide necessary support not only to the seafarers but also to their families. Since the seafarers play a key role in such incidents, the appropriate preparation activities are considered integral to their health and well-being - and they are equally important to their family members.
