We hereby continue to offer you the series of excellent films making the world famous Mighty Ships series. Today’s video is devoted to the Maersk Viking drillship. The design of the vessel was developed by Samsung and subsequently upgraded by Maersk engineers in order to reach even higher efficiency. The vessel features dual derrick as well as huge areas for subsea work and storage purposes.

The technical characteristics of this ship allow for the maximum efficiency of the well construction; the activities associated with field development will also be performed at the top level. Every effort was made by the designers of the vessel to maximize the uptime by means of the dual pipe handling applied. The vessel also features the accommodation facilities for the two hundred and thirty people, in the meantime providing the tank capacities for the great operational capabilities.

MV Fairplayer – she is the strongest and one of the newest ships in the world. She will use her giant cranes to lift some of the biggest and heaviest cargoes ever. Her battles will be unknown every day; as it is the case with any newly built ship, the crew members have to expect the unexpected and be ready to cope with many problems, and this is never easy.

She has a lot to do on her maiden voyage – the assignment is to transport four thousand tons of various components for the oil refineries from Italy to United States. There are only one hundred and sixty ships like MV Fairplayer in the whole world but this one was built to be the absolutely strongest; however, she cannot claim the heavy lift crown until she completes her first voyage. Delivered in Romania, this ship can lift and carry up to thirty thousand tons.

On her first job she will pick up and transport five oil refinery components of enormous size. This task is really difficult since any single mistake can be fatal for the crew. We can say that MV Fairplayer definitely features one of the most sophisticated ship designs and the video devoted to this remarkable facility is for sure one of the most interesting episodes of the whole Mighty Ships series.

MIGHTY SHIPS — MV RESOLUTION

There is no ship anywhere like MV Resolution, a marine monster crane. Her everyday job is tough and risky. This is a year-round assignment of building wind farms in the dangerous seas. In fact this is the first vessel in the world ever custom built to install wind turbines on the high seas. That is the reason why she is one of the busiest ships in the world. Today, giant wind farms are feeding cities and there are more on the way.

The challenges of MV Resolution are really and every day this ship faces serious problems to cope with – wind, waves, and weather – and all of them are beyond her control. Working in such conditions is extremely difficult. MV Resolution is the largest ship of her kind – the giant jack-up ship with the legs that can lift her above the water. She has six of such legs and this fact makes her truly unique – most of her rivals may only boast four legs.

These gigantic legs are lowered hydraulically down to the seabed and then the whole structure of the vessel is lifted up to ten meters above the water surface. In less than one hour she can change from a classic ship into a stable offshore construction platform. MV Resolution is now ready to build a huge, twenty storey tall wind turbines…

MIGHTY SHIPS — NORTH SEA GIANT

She is one of the largest subsea construction ships in the world. The North Sea Giant – this boat can do anything and now her mission is to build a factory three hundred meters below the surface. It is a job that requires special cranes, submarines and nerves of steel – the project costs billions of dollars – a project that world has never seen before. When it comes to subsea construction, there can be no option better than North Sea Giant.

Her specialty is installing massive components for the oil and gas facilities on the ocean floor. She stands forty-six meters above the water and stretches one hundred and sixty-one meters from bow to stern. A state-of-the-art propeller system enables her to turn swiftly and she has seven cranes for lifting and lowering cargo into the sea. The North Sea Giant is undisputed flagship in the North Sea Shipping fleet.

The captain of the ship leads the team of one hundred and fourteen crew, including contractors and technicians. The capabilities and equipment of the vessel are impressive. For the past eight months North Sea Giant has been working off the coast of Norway on the most ambitious undersea construction project ever - the world’s first underwater natural gas compression station.

MIGHTY SHIPS — NORTHERN LEADER

Well, there were so many of the Mighty Ships episodes devoted to the various remarkable ships of today, and now let us spend an hour watching an excellent film about the Northern Leader, one of the most powerful and efficient vessels in her class. There only a few vessels in the whole world that could be compared to this one and she is definitely leading the Alaskan fleet of fishing vessels.

The design of this truly perfect ship allows her to tow an incredibly long fifty-mile fishing line equipped with seventy five thousand hooks, reeling in some of the best skate, cod and other fish, working in the difficult-to-work and harsh weather conditions of the Bering Sea. Northern Leader is engaged in active operations throughout the year – the design of this ship allows her to work in the cold ambient temperatures and high winds that are normally encountered in her area of work.

Catching fish with hooks and not with nets is one of the design features of this toughest and longest fishing vessels of today. The crew of the ship is prepared to battle thirteen-meter high waves and strongest winds with the speed exceeding hundred and ten kilometers per hour, and to return home with the usual massive catch.
